Congrats on making it to Day 3! We're at the halfway mark of this course, so we thought this particular topic should be an important one. Although the ocean is connected to us all no matter where we live, it's time to hear about the stakeholders who are directly impacted by its declining health - coastal communities of India. We rarely get the opportunity to hear these stories on mainstream media, so we encourage you to take full advantage of these resources that are trying to amplify the needs of people who have known and loved the sea for generations. First, please skim these articles that discuss how coastal communities are at the front lines of climate-induced ocean issues, and how rising sea levels will be one of the toughest and most expensive consequences for India to face given its populated coastal cities:

Coastal communities in India bear the brunt of climate change

Coastal Concerns: Rising sea levels will inundate coastal areas sooner than projected

Responses to climate change in coastal communities: lessons from India

Trapped or resettled: coastal communities in the Sundarbans Delta, India

Please watch either (or both!) of these documentaries. Note: you can watch at a faster speed if you are short on time, or even just a 15 min segment of your choice. We found these stories really powerful as they are directly narrated by people who are affected. Feel free to use English subtitles if you need.

Oceans and Coasts

That's a wrap. Congrats! Today was lengthier than usual, but we hope you found that it was worth it! Think about at least two of the following questions and share your perspective on with us on our LinkedIn community!

Discussion Questions:

  1. Which documentary did you watch (Shifting Sands and Changing Tides/Coral Woman) and what was your biggest takeaway regarding coastal communities?
  2. After having read and heard today's stories, do you believe that ocean-related issues are simply environmental issues or also human issues? Tell us why.
  3. If you have experienced or heard of other coastal concerns and would like to share with the group, let us know!
